On 13/09 2011 between 4pm and 6pm, the Big Society Roadshow for the Charnwood Area Forums took place at The Moira Centre, Moira Street Loughborough LE11 1AX.

This event was very well attended and supported the principle of ‘Helping to develop the Big Society in your local Community', providing information on Leicestershire County Council's Community Forum Budgets, the Big Society Grant Fund and other relevant funding information.  Community members and community groups came along to the event to find out more about what is being done to support the development of the Big Society in Leicestershire.

South Charnwood (Syston, Thurmaston and Wreake villages) Area Forum
Tue, 05 Jul 2011 7:00pm

The last meeting of the Forum was held at the Memorial Hall Thurmaston, starting at 7pm (6.30pm for informal networking and information).

30 people attended the meeting and the main item on the agenda was a feedback on the Green Spaces consultation that was conducted at the previous meeting, and by on-line responses since then. Simon McIntosh, from Leicestershire County Council, explained that the data will provide an evidence base that can be used by communities and councils in supporting the open green spaces that are important to them. There will continue to be further feedback in the Autumn.

Ed McWilliam, also from the County Council, explained how the County maintains and promotes a wide network of Rights of way, which are obviously valued by people, and are used for a wide range of purposes. Sargent Andy Moscrop, Leicestershire Constabulary, explained an overall reduction in reported crime but listened to peoples concerns, especially over the reporting of anti-social behavoiur.

The Forum heard a series of short reports from the projects that had been supported by the Area Forum's budget in 2009-10. The meeting was pleased to hear a good measure of success and some building of community spirit in the Forum area.

The next meeting will be on Monday 10th October at a venue yet to be confirmed.

There will be a further meeting on 28th November which will take the form of a workshop at which local people will be invited to decided how to spend the Area Forum's budget for 2011-12.

The last meeting was held at Barkby Village Hall, Beeby Road, Barkby, Leicester LE7 3QB. 47 people attended the meeting.

The main agenda item was an interactive discussion which canvassed opinion and views on local green spaces. Local residents from the villages in the Forum area indicated on maps provided the green spaces they value and why they value them. The results will be collated and this will help to inform local policy and planning processes as well as our response to emerging national policies.

The meeting also heard an update from the police on local policing issues, a report of work undertaken in the Priority Neighbourhood in Thurmaston, and a collaborative venture between three local Parish Councils to share ownership and use of a Vehicle Activation Sign to reduce speeding traffic.

Wed, 07 Oct 2009

The last meeting of South Charnwood (Syston, Thurmaston and Wreake Villages) area forum was held at Rearsby Village Hall.

Over 60 members of the community attended a workshop and shared their ideas about how the Forum budget of £20,000 can best be used within the following priorities:

Supporting vibrant village and town centres
Supporting and developing children and young people
Supporting cleaner, greener, safer environments

There were a number of lively and interesting discussions and people enjoyed hearing of project ideas from their own, and neighbouring, villages.

As the meeting progressed people used "voting handsets" to register which project ideas they liked the most and wished to be supported by the Forum budget.

We apologise for the confusion at the voting stage of the workshop. We have analysed the results in detail. The results confirm that there was a significant number of people that had not been able to get their 3 votes in during the final vote and that the call to redo the final vote was therefore justified. Some people have pointed to inconsistencies between the first and the second vote and have called the result into question. However, a comparison between the first and second vote shows that the results are largely the same. Both votes show a clear preference for the same four projects. These four will now be taken forward as the priority projects in line for a share of the £20,000. We remain committed to undertake activity to see how the remaining 5 projects can be progressed, and indeed, how other projects that were suggested at the workshop can be further assisted.

Details of the voting can be viewed by clicking on the link below.
