Shepshed and Hathern Area Forum
Thu, 16 Jun 2011 6:30pm

The last meeting of the Forum was held at Hathern Club, 44 Dovecote Street, Hathern. 23 people attended. The main items covered were a feedback on the recent Green Spaces consultation and a report on the Passion youth club, a faith-based group, in Shepshed. The Forum also received an update on the progress of Shepshed's Community-Led Plan and a report on the completion of the four projects that the Forum's budget had supported.

The main item of discussion, at the request of the previous meeting, was speeding traffic in the Forum area. Mike Wilson from Leicestershire County Council explained how to set up a Community Speedwatch group (which the police welcome). Because of the evidence of speeding gathered in the Community-led Plan group's questionnaire, Shepshed would be eligible to form such a group. Chair of the Forum, and local County and Borough councillor, Mrs Radford welcomed the development.

The next meeting of the Forum will be in the Autumn on a date and at a venue to be decided.

26 people attended the meeting; County Councillor Christine Radford was elected chair and Claire Poole was elected vice chair for the next two years. The Forum thanked the previous chair, John Popley, for his good service and he wished the Forum well for the future.

The items discussed included the progress of a Community Plan for Shepshed. Samatha Woods, chair of the steering group welcomed the widest possible support from anyone at all within Shepshed. Other topics included the future of local transport in the area, the Winter maintenance programme, two current NHS consultations, and Adult Learning in Hathern and Shepshed.

The Forum heard about good progress being made on all of its PB projects. The only exception was that unfortunately it had not been possible to achieve the Half-Pipe for young people in Hathern, for which projected costs turned out to be too low. Even if further funding could be secured, there is little time left now to develop this project, as the Forum budget needs to be spent by end of March 2011. However, the Forum is still keen to support young people in Hathern. It allocated £1913.35 for equipment and youth activities for young people from Hathern and manadated Richard Downing, Community Engagement Manager, to investigate, and liaise with appropriate partners including Hathern Parish Council, on how the remaining £3644.82 might be spent for the benefit of young people in Hathern.

The next meeting will be on Monday 14th February 2011 and is likely to be in Hathern.
