On 13/09 2011 between 4pm and 6pm, the Big Society Roadshow for the Charnwood Area Forums took place at The Moira Centre, Moira Street Loughborough LE11 1AX.
This event was very well attended and supported the principle of ‘Helping to develop the Big Society in your local Community', providing information on Leicestershire County Council's Community Forum Budgets, the Big Society Grant Fund and other relevant funding information. Community members and community groups came along to the event to find out more about what is being done to support the development of the Big Society in Leicestershire.

The last meeting was held at Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall. 25 people attended and received feedback, and asked questions, on the Green Space consultation and the latest situation regarding the Ashton Green development just to the South of this Forum's area. Simon McIntosh, Group Manager People and places at Leicestershire County Council also fed back on the Big Society consultation and was able to report Big Society grants being currently available and a Community Forum budget later in the year. Andrew Hitchcock explained the current situation with the County Council's Youth service, and its likely impact upon youth service delivery in this Forum area. He described various alternative models of youth provision and aspects of help that are available to villages that want to support their own.
Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies, chair of the Forum, paid tribute to the success of the projects supported by last year's Forum budget and encouraged people to be creative and imaginative in making best use of the opportunities presented by another Community Forum budget later this year.
The next meeting will be on 3rd October at Birstall.

There was also a joint presentation by the Police and Charnwood Borough Council about how partnership working is acheiving much success in tackling anti-social behaviour in Charnwood.
After the meeting, local resident, Nicky Frisby reported that she had found the meeting to be very positive and worthwhile. “There was a lot of engagement with a whole range of services and I particularly liked the way they listened to questions from local residents and tried to give them an answer there and then”.

The last meeting of the Bradgate, Rothley, Mountsorrel and Birstall Area Forum was held at Birstall Village Hall.
Fifty four people attended the meeting and discussed progress on the projects bought forward through the participatory budget process. A recommendation was accepted by the Forum to fund the following projects:
Mountsorrel Youth Cafe; (to provide equipment for a new resource providing after school education and recreation in a socially deprived neighbourhood). £10,000 reserved until the end of June 2010 to be spent on the re-furbishment of the kitchen for use by children and young people with particular regard for the importance of healthy eating, nutrition etc.
Woodhouse Eaves Multi-Use Games Area; (to complete a recreational resource for young people that has already seen considerable community effort and support as well as considerable success in raising external funding from a range of partner organisations) £1,403.80 allocated.
Friends of Birstall swimming Pool; (to provide a cover to reduce heating loss and secure the long term future of the pool as a community asset). £5,000 allocated to this project with some funding coming, additionally, from the school. The group will work with the school, parish council and the local community to encourage more use of the pool including consideration of improving the lighting in the access to the pool.
Portable speed controls; (to allow for a mobile speed reduction unit to be shared around Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves and contribute to the Community Speedwatch initiative in reducing speeding in the local area). £3.000 allocated.
The recommendations agreed above will now be put to Charnwood Together for final endorsement before funding can be released.

The local priorities are:
Improving access to services
Supporting and developing young people
Making the area safer
The discussions gave rise to a wide range of project ideas and community members used "voting handsets" to express their preferences from those which were described. The four most supported ideas were for Mountsorrel Youth Cafe, Birstall swimming pool cover, Woodhouse Eaves Multi-Use Games area and Speed control signs.
