On Tuesday 17 January 2012, the County Council's Cabinet met to discuss budget proposals for the next four years and launch a consultation with residents and key stakeholders.
You are invited to view the summary document and comment on the proposals by visiting www.leics.gov.uk/budgetconsultation
The consultation period runs until Tuesday 31st January 2012.
A summary of the consultation responses will be available on our website and the results will be considered by the Cabinet in February, before the full County Council takes a final decision on the budget on 22nd February.
In 2011 Leicestershire County Council asked the public to say which local green spaces they particularly value and why. This was in response to Government proposals to create a new designation, to protect green areas of particular importance to local communities. Online maps are now available highlighting more than 3000 areas that people value across Leicestershire.
The maps were produced after more than 2000 people told the County Council about the most valued local green spaces. This information was collected at Community Forums and via an online tool. More »
County Council leader David Parsons said: ‘I’m delighted that 2000 people identified their favourite green spaces – this is a real example of localism in action. I’m particularly interested to see high levels of interest in protecting land in Loughborough’s Outwoods, Lubbesthorpe, Coalville and Whitwick. Giving this data to local people will enable them to use it in neighbourhood planning and local campaigning.’
The highest responses covered areas proposed for housing, such as Whitwick Green, Outwoods, Lubbesthorpe and Brookfield Farm. The most common land categories people wanted to protect were country parks and woodland; community green spaces, such as village greens; playing fields, open countryside; derelict land and private land such as golf courses.
The information gained up to the closing date of 15th April 2011 has been used to produce into the following:
• A County-wide report which gives an overview of the information collected during the consultation.
• An interactive online analysis tool which is where all the comments made by the public can be viewed, using an interactive map.
• A series of 27 Community Forum reports which are more specific to that particular forum area and also incorporate Parish Council comments submitted as part of the process.
All of the above can be viewed by clicking this link
Following on from this the Local Authorities of Leicester and Leicestershire are currently working together to produce the 'Green Spaces in Leicester and Leicestershire: Local Green Spaces Toolkit and Existing Policy Context' document. This document sets out a framework for local planning authorities, local councils and community groups to assist them in understanding and assessing elements of green infrastructure.

Leicestershire residents are warmly invited to a meeting with the Chair of the Police Authority and the Chief Constable of Leicestershire Constabulary, as the two organisations enter one of the most challenging periods in their history.
In February 2012 the budget for 2012-13 will be set and these meetings will enable The Police Authority and Leicestershire Constabulary to explain the options they are considering.
Chairman Barrie Roper and Chief Constable Simon Cole said: "This series of meetings across the county will enable us to explain more about the financial challenges to be faced in 2012-13 and hear your views on local policing priorities and the use of resources. More information will also be given on the forthcoming elections for the Police and Crime Commissioner, who will replace the Police Authority in November next year.Despite the challenges ahead both the Police Authority and the Constabulary remain focused on further improvement of the policing services provided for the people and businesses of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland."
